SHE: I was raped.
But they say it doesn’t count as one.
ME: But why?
SHE: Its just that the rapist happened to be my husband
Marital rape or spousal rape is the act of sexual intercourse with one’s spouse without the spouse’s consent.
It’s a hard reality that India is one of the 36 countries were marital rape is not considered as a crime in the sense of law.
Just read the following excerpts,
“I was raped on my wedding night, then I was 19 and it was an arranged marriage. It was horrible, my husband had sex with me 7 times on that night. In the morning I was expected to be ready for the rituals but I was totally tired and unable to walk. And I was asked of the reason by my sister law and I broke down and I told her the thing. But she just asked me to rest. Its been seven years and nothing changed. I was beaten for saying no to sex and when I went to the police station, they said their can be no rape by husband and I was asked to go home.
“My husband raped me daily. He forced himself on me, every single day, even on the days I bled. He did not spare me all through the pregnancy and even till the last day of delivery of my child. I want no woman to lose time to speak up against such an atrocity. Speak out early, so that you do not continue to suffer as I did. I was scared of him all along.” (A woman on a TV program) Continue reading “Marital Rape – Bangles(handcuffs), Mangal sutra(hallows), Sindhur(blood)”
